| Despite the frigid temperatures, over 130 people turned out for WRPCO's civics event, "Get to Know Your Public Representatives," which was held at the Boone School auditorium on the evening of January 23rd. The event was divided into three parts. First, the representatives in attendance--Alderman Bernard Stone, State Senator Ira Silverstein, and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky--described how their respective offices function, the kinds of issues they deal with, and the ways they can serve their constituents. Second, the representatives answered a wide range of questions from the audience, concerning such matters as CTA service and funding, citizenship applications, health insurance, state support for business districts, TIFs, child care support, and the timing and funding for a new school in the neighborhood. Finally, the representatives stepped off the stage to meet their constituents and talk with them face-to-face. This last portion of the event was exceptionally lively and valuable, and the event ran well past its scheduled 9 PM closing.
